The district derives its name from Thar and Parkar but later became one word Tharparkar. district was re-notified as “Tharparkar” on 19-10-1993. The head quarter of this District Mithi,it is spread over an area of 19638sq: Kms. Having population of 914291 souls(1998)& bounded on the north by Mirpurkhas & Umerkot distcs, on east by Barmer and Jaisselmir districts of India, on west by dist: Badin and on south by Ran of Kutch.Dist: Tharparkar comprising of 4 talukas and 44 Union Councils.

There is no river or stream in the district. However, in Ngar-Parkar there are two perennial springs named Anchlesar and Sardharo as well as temporary streams called Bhetiani river and Gordhro river after the rains
